The garnishes are prepared. The gin (or vodka) has been harmoniously mixed with the vermouth. Glasses are in the freezer.
Appetizers are ready (you need snacks with your martini, obviously).
The only thing left to set the mood for a quiet, relaxing cocktail hour is the music.
For me, the music sets the precedent for what type of martini environment you’d like to enjoy. Whether it’s just an evening for two, or a small gathering, the playlist sets everything in motion.
When it’s just Eric and I, I like to play something that allows me to really relax as I sip my martini. Where I can close my eyes and listen to the saxophone solo, or the soft vocals of the singer.
So for today’s blog, we’ll be talking about a few of my recent favorites for those quiet martini evenings. Get that chilled martini ready, sit back, and enjoy these selections.
The Oscar Peterson Trio at Baker’s Keyboard Lounge: The Complete Recordings

I like this live version, because I like to imagine I’m in a local jazz club, in a dark, intimate setting with just a few other tables, sipping my martini as I listen to the gentle sound of the piano keys, followed by the drums and cello. There is light clapping at the end of each song, so you can pretend you’re there live without actually having to leave the house. And who doesn’t love that?
Catherine Russell: Send for Me

Want a little more lounge singing? Catherine Russell fits the bill. I’m imagining myself in New Orleans, listening to her croon “Going Back to New Orleans” or “If I Could Be With You”. Take a pause from your martini and maybe slow dance to a song in the middle of your living room. Trust me, it’s the best.
Sony Holland, Sanssouci

I am proud to say that I personally know this talented artist. Sony Holland is a San Francisco based artist seamlessly goes from covering classics from Frank Sinatra to Linda Ronstadt to original recordings. Her quiet, controlled voice is perfect for reading an article or book.
loonight, c l a v a, Kazuna, VYLO

Imagine you’re at a bar at a swanky hotel, or a really trendy lounge in NYC or Boston. This is the vibe. I like to listen to this music out on my deck, as if I’m out on a rooftop patio overlooking the city lights (even if my deck is small and looks at the backs of houses, it still works)!
John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman

Last (but definitely not least), is one of my absolute favorites. It’s perfect for cocktail hour and digestif. The combination of these two icons will always be in the elite club of jazz classics.
I hope you add these albums to your playlist, and enjoy every time you have a sip of that martini! Tell us in the comments your favorites!
