Restaurant Feature: The Street Bar at The Newbury Boston

Welcome to another new blog series, Restaurant Features!

This post was originally going to be part of the ‘Tini Snacks’ series, but after seeing how much I wrote about this bar, it needs its own feature! Very Cold, Very Dry is always evolving, so thank you for coming along for the ride!

Hope everyone is having a good start to the week. Sometimes the days feel repetitive, causing me to ask “What day is it?”

We wake up, get ready, eat breakfast, take the train to work, take the train home, make dinner, watch a tv show, then head to bed. Repeat the next day. That’s why I look forward to Martini Fridays (read the latest here), because it’s finally time to relax, unwind and enjoy my favorite cocktail and ‘tini snack. However, with our different schedules, sometimes we’re not able to enjoy happy hour together.

So, on those special occasions when we both have the day off, with no work or obligations, and the only thing we have to decide is what time is cocktail hour, we treasure every moment together.

This past Monday, we did a little shopping in the Beacon Hill neighborhood and finished a lot earlier than expected. So, should we go home, or find the most convenient location to get a martini? You can bet we chose the latter.

We decided to head to The Street Bar at The Newbury Hotel. I’ve always wanted to try this place, but with its small space, perfect location on Newbury Street, and having Contessa, one of the hottest restaurants in Boston, on the rooftop deck, their seats are always full.

We came in on a Monday at around 3:00, and it was already pretty crowded. Fortunately, we found some nice seats facing the street.

The plush seats, dark wood, and electric artwork make this the perfect place to be seen. As soon as I opened the menu, I knew what to order: The Signature Martini. It has Plymouth Gin, Tanqueray Gin, Noilly Prat Dry (Vermouth), Carpano Bianco Vermouth (White Vermouth), and Reagans (orange bitters). The waitress said an olive or a twist would pair well, so I decided to go with a twist.

The gins melded perfectly together, and the sweetness of the white vermouth and orange bitters are balanced by the dry vermouth. The twist was a perfect complement.

I definitely am going to try and recreate this drink at home, so stay tuned for our recipe!

The martinis came an array of potato chips, olives, and mixed nuts. The perfect salty snack for Happy Hour.

If you are exhausted after a long day of shopping on Newbury Street, and need a delicious martini, we’d definitely recommend coming here. However, come on a weekday afternoon, or be prepared to wait.

Let me know if you have tried this place in the comments! Or, if you have another recommendation on Newbury, drop it below!

Cheers!

We’re Lindsay and Eric!

We believe there is nothing better than the first sip of a very cold, very dry martini. Choose your gin, mix in your vermouth, garnish with an olive, twist (or both!), and let’s discuss the best cocktail in the world.
